LESSON 11: Personal Protection and Data Protection

Lesson1 : Navigation and Search.

In the first class we were able to learn the difference between web browsers and search engines:

  • Web browser: allows us to surf the web (explorer, chrome, safari, firefox...)
  • Search engine: allows us to look for information ( Google is the most well-known)
We also learned how to access the private configuration of these web browsers.

To settle privacy on web browsers and search engines you should follow the following steps, for example on Google:

1. Go to your account and select "Manage your Google Account".

2. Click on Privacy & Personalization.

Also, in some we browsers such as Mozilla or Chrome, you can open a "New Private Window".

As for search engines, there are some tips to make the job easier. For example:

-We learned that to search for something you can use the "advanced search" or go to the top bar and click on news, images, books....

-To search for more than one topic you can use the word "AND".  (For example, discover and teach).

-If you search for at least one of the two words, you must use "OR". (For example, discover or teach).

-Also, to search specifically for a particular phrase you must use quotation marks ("").

-In case you want to search for a specific file type, you must put filetype:(file format). Depending on what you are looking for, you can use the following annotations: pdf, doc, docx...

We also learned that there are sites like "malditobulo" or "tragabulos" that will help us to contrast if the information is false or not. In addition, knowing if other people have investigated about it, the year of publication or spelling mistakes we can also know if they are fakes news.

Finally, we did a practice session that consisted of creating an account in digo. This would help us to save all the pages where I found useful information related to the topic of my work. After having found some pages my group decided to create a group in digo so we could send each other everything we found about it. Attached are pictures of the practice.
